Whether you are looking at USANA, a pharmacy brand or something from an online shop, the label tells you more than the advertising does. Here is how to read a supplement label so you can make an informed choice. This is general information, not medical advice.

1. Serving size and servings per container

All amounts on the label refer to one serving. Check how many capsules or tablets make a serving and how many servings the container holds, because that determines the real cost per day.

2. Ingredient amounts

Look at how much of each ingredient is in a serving and the unit used, such as mg or mcg. Compare with your own needs and ask a doctor or dietitian before taking anything new.

3. Percent daily value

Where shown, this compares the amount to a reference intake. More is not always better. Some nutrients have upper limits.

4. Other ingredients and allergens

Check fillers, coatings and allergen statements, especially if you have food allergies.

5. Testing and quality information

Look for information about how the product is made and tested. A company that explains its quality process clearly is easier to trust than one that only makes big promises.

6. Directions and warnings

Read the instructions, the warnings and any advice for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children or people on medication.

7. Expiry date and storage

Check the date and how to store the product.

8. Be careful with big claims

Be cautious of any product or seller that promises to treat or cure a disease. Supplements are not a replacement for medicine or a balanced diet.

Before you buy

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take medication or have a health condition. Buy from official sellers so that you know the product is genuine.
